On March 29, 2021, the Canadian government extended a temporary public policy that allows visitor visa holders to apply for a work permit within Canada until August 31, 2021.
Generally speaking, visitor visa holders cannot apply for a work permit within Canada. However, with the effect of this policy, they will be able to apply for one without having to leave Canada.
To be eligible for a work permit under this policy, an applicant must:
- Have always remained in Canada with a valid visitor visa or visitor record,
- Have a valid job offer,
- Submit a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment, and
- Meet other eligibility and admissibility requirements.
Applicants must submit their applications before August 31, 2021.
Furthermore, if applicants had a valid work permit in the past 12 months, they can start working for their new employer while their application is in process.
