It is another time of the year, Lunar New Year. For many people who have an East Asian ethnicity, this is the most important holiday.
Nowadays, anybody in Canada can enjoy this holiday. We share the spirit and happiness with friends, family, and loved ones.
This year, Lunar New Year is Friday, February 12, 2021.
What is Lunar New Year about
After a year of hard work, we want some time to enjoy the harvest. Lunar New Year celebration preparation usually starts on the 8th of Lunar December.
Every day, we have a unique ritual, and on New Year’s Eve, there is the biggest celebration. We decorate our households, buy gifts for family, wear new clothes, and make a lot of food.
Every activity we do during these days represents good wishes. Lunar New Year is the time to plant hope for the year ahead. Hope for health, happiness, luck in the career, and maybe a sweet relationship too.
How do we celebrate Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year is a holiday for family members to get together. For many people who live far from their families, this time is precious.
We give out red envelopes to the elderly and children and wish them a happy new year. We also see relatives and friends and hope to share the happiness with them.
On new year’s day, many people go to a temple and pray.
We make a lot of food that can feed the entire household for days. Among all of the food, dumplings might be the most well-known. For many people elsewhere, dumplings somehow represent the Chinese culture.
Why do we eat dumplings? It is not merely because of the delicious taste, but also they represent good luck for wealth. There is a popular belief that the shape of dumplings is similar to ancient Chinese ingots.
We wish you a healthy new year
Due to the spread of COVID-19, it might be impossible to celebrate the holiday as usual. However, the happiness and spirit continue. Technology makes connection a lot easier nowadays so remember to wish your loved ones a healthy new year online if you cannot visit them.
