What is a visitor visa?
A visitor visa is an official travel document that the Canadian government sticks to your passport.
What is an eTA?
An eTA is also an official travel document. However, this is only available to citizens of visa-exempt countries.
Do I need a visitor visa?
If you are a citizen of a non-visa-exempt country, you will need a visitor visa before travelling to Canada.
You can determine whether you need a visitor visa on the
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. An eTA is only required if you travel by air.
How long can I stay in Canada on a visitor visa?
A visitor visa or eTA allows you to enter and remain in Canada for a maximum of 6 months. You may leave and re-enter Canada provided your visa allows multiple entries. You may extend your visitor status if all conditions remain the same.
When do I need a visitor visa?
The purpose of visiting Canada may include at least one of the following purposes:
1. Tourism and vacations,
2. Family visit and reunification,
3. Business visit,
4. Short-term studies (less than 6 months),
5. Returning worker/student,
6. Other.
You cannot work and earn salaries in Canada if you just hold a visitor visa or eTA. However, you may study in Canada provided the program is less than 6 months.
If you are a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and want to visit them in Canada for more than 6 months, you may be eligible for a super visa.
Eligibility requirements
Generally speaking, you must meet the following requirements for a visitor visa:
1. You have enough money to pay for your transportation between your country of residence and Canada and other expenses,
2. You are admissible to Canada (i.e., criminal background, health, etc.), and
3. You meet other country-specific requirements.
